OK, we promise this is the last Tekken 4 preview. Seriously. The game's going to be out in a month, so we just wanted to sneak in our impressions of this PS2 game before the review hits.
Yep, we got a look at a near-final version of the American game. At the core, not much has changed since Tekken 3 (let's all try to forget about Tekken Tag Tournament for a while, shall we?). But the huge graphical jump, quality-over-quantity roster and smart gameplay revisions make Tekken 4 a strong update to an aging series.
The game has two new additions to its original cast: The first is Christie Montero, a student of Eddy Gordo's Capoeira style who plays a lot like her teacher. Second is Craig Marduk, an ex-Vale Tudo champion with a strong grappling and ground-attack game. These included, we found a total of 19 fighters--that's nine untockables in addition to the 10 who are available right off the bat. And Namco tells us the final version may have a couple more hidden characters.
Every fighter has two costumes (or in Kuma's case, a Panda alter-ego) that contribute a great deal to the vibrant style of the game. Watch Lei's open shirt or Christie's long hair animate and you'll see what we mean--everything looks just as good as it does in the arcade version of Tekken 4. It doesn't have the fluidity and depth of Virtua Fighter 4--it's a bit clunkier on the control. But its crisp visuals and interactive arenas are the best on the PS2 thus far.
The huge playing fields are fenced in for the first time in the series, though you might not even notice for several rounds--they're that big. But objects like trees, phone booths and statues make handy strategic blockers in almost every stage. Using these obstacles and the new grab-and-shove maneuver (see sidebar on previous page), you can set your opponent up to take major damage. Every time you land a punch or kick on an enemy who's up against one of these barriers or the wall of the arena, he'll take extra-impact damage when he hits it. It works especially well for catching an opponent in a combo string, juggling an airborne fighter or inflicting extra damage on one who's down for the count.
Tekken 4 is all about the two-player game, obviously, but an updated version of Tekken 3's Tekken Force minigame gives you something new to do when you're light on competition. It's a singleplayer, Bouncer-style beat-'em-up that lets you use any of the tournament fighters you have unlocked to inflict pain on jumpsuited grunts and bosses in a race against time. Pick up time and health bonuses (represented, for some reason, as little chickens and eggs) along the way to keep your energy and clock counter up. Yeah, you've also got your obligatory Time Attack, Survival and Practice modes, but those come standard with any 3D fighter nowadays.
Tekken 4 was such a letdown that Namco really needed to nail it with Tekken 5. Well, they certainly did that as this is one of, if not my favorite fighting game on the PlayStation 2. This for me is one of those rare occasions where the home version of the game is actually better than what its arcade big brother offered.
The Real King of the Iron Fist
What really grabs you about this game is just how much it “feels” like Tekken. There was something very off and strange about Tekken 4 and thankfully rather than building upon that, Namco went back to what the original trilogy (and to an extent Tekken Tag) so special with Tekken 5. The game plays just like classic Tekken and that is a good thing.
Tekken is the kind of game that anyone can jump in, play, and have fun with. It can in many ways be a button masher kind of game. yet there is a real level of skill involved here that if you are willing to put the time into learning makes the game even more fun, especially when playing against another skilled player.
You’re The Best Around
Tekken 5 hands down is the best-looking fighting game on the PlayStation 2! This is a series that has always been known for its high-quality presentation and this game takes it to a whole new level. Never have your favorite characters looked so detailed! I notice it especially in the face and the facial animations! The stages look great too and they are not as over the top with explosions like the arcade version was which I am thankful for.The soundtrack is very fitting and rocks! I love most of the songs here and the voice acting is also very well done. It is all tied together with these awesome CG scenes that are not only very well done, many will also give you a chuckle too.
So Much Fighting!
There is no shortage of game modes on offer here. You have your main arcade mode where you can pick your character, beat a bunch of characters, and then the final boss to get the ending. There is also time attack, vs and a new beat-em-up mode called The Devil Within which I thought was a whole lot of fun and very addictive. Tekken 5 also has a bunch of stuff that you can collect so you can customize your characters. I will admit this is not something for me as when I play as Paul I want to play as Paul and be just the way he looks, but you can get all kinds of weird stuff for your characters if you like.
Three Of The Best
As you can tell, I love what this game offers, but if you are a hardcore Tekken fan this game has the best extra content imaginable. You get the arcade versions of Tekken 1, 2, and 3 thrown in with this game! They are all on the same disc so you have a fantastic collection of fighting games here.
Hmmm, the more I think about it the more I might have to say Tekken 5 is my favorite fighting game on the PlayStation 2. If not, it is certainly in the top 2 or 3. This is how you recover after releasing a game that is so/so which was the case with Tekken 4. This game is a damn masterpiece and one that needs to be enjoyed by everyone who likes fighting games. I must say that even now I do not think the Tekken series has recaptured the highs that it did with this game.
