The MSL, short for master subsidy lock, code is one of the two six-digit codes implemented in CDMA phones. The other code is the SPC, or one-time service programming code, and is only used to activate the phone onto a wireless service. The MSL code is used whenever the phone must be reprogrammed so, if you want to flash a custom ROM on your phone, you need to know its MSL code. Fortunately, the MSL code is created using the phone’s Electronic Serial Number. Of course, each carrier uses a different algorithm. A Sprint phone MSL code is different from an AT&T phone MSL code.

Connect the phone to your computer by using the USB data transfer cable that came with the phone. Copy all three files from your computer to the phone's storage card. Disconnect the phone from the computer.

Turn off the phone, remove the back cover and remove the battery. Write down the ESN found behind the battery. Place the battery back into the phone and put the back cover back into place.

Turn on the phone, and open its file browser. Navigate to the storage card, highlight the GetSPC(PPC 2003) file, and select Open or Run, depending on your phone model. If you have a touchscreen phone, tap on the GetSPC(PPC 2003) file to start the app.

- You must first have the MSL number for your phone. The MSL unlock code is used for programming your phone yourself, and is unique for every phone. You can retrieve the MSL for your phone by using the GetSPC application. It's essentially a keygen that calculates what the MSL should be from the hexadecimal ESN (case-sensitive). You can download it from HERE. Otherwise you can call Sprint technical support, tell them you're a developer, and you need the MSL number for your phone.
- Open up your dialer, and dial in ##3282#
- A window should open, select Edit
- Enter in your MSL from step 1, and press the OK button (left softkey)
- Select the line that has the value MIP_Mode under the Item column
- Press the Menu button (right softkey) and choose Edit
- Change the value from from Mobile IP Only to Mobile IP Preferred
- Press the OK button (left softkey) and soft reset when it tells you to.
